"Tono"is famous place for its rich heritage of folklore. It is located in Iwate prefecture , the north-east of Japan.
Tono was focused after publishing "The Legends of Tono" written by authority of folklorist Kunio Yanagida about 100 yeas ago.
Since ancient times, the people living in this area have passed down traditional stories about mountain (Hayachine mountain is the main object of worship ) deities, enchantment and supernatural beings.
Exploring this area by bicycle, I felt ancient legend is surely dotted and still alive all over there.
According to the legend,there is a story that a man never go back home due to picking up beautiful flower growing wild at Mt. Hayachine.
I heard the same story was happened recently. The landlady told me that a climber who picked the flower there is still missing.
Although I'm not sure that it is true or not, Tono has some power makes us believe mystery.
These pictures are Unedori-sama shrine dedicated to the deities of love and marriage. If you can tie a red clothe by in one hand, you will success in love.
『遠野物語』の舞台、遠野へ。民俗学の権威、柳田國男がこの地に残る座敷童、山人、オシラサマ、コンセイサマなど数百にのぼる民間伝承を記した遠野物語から、すでに100年が過ぎた。
サイクリングをして周辺をまわるだけでも、今でもあちこちに遠野物語の世界が変わることなく、生活に根付いているのをはっきり感じる。
このエリア一帯が結界に守られているような、ちょっと独特の空気・・・ 京都のそれとはまた全然違うのだけども。
ここに暮らす人々は、先代から脈々と受け継いだ教えを守ってきた。霊峰・早池峰山(はやちねさん)を御神体に、自然を畏れ共存してきたのだろう。
昔から、早池峰山に咲く美しい花を摘み取ったために、帰って来なかった人がいると伝えられる。旅館の女将からも、最近でもそんな行方不明者がいたと聞いたが、そんなことがあってもおかしくないな、と思ってしまう不思議な遠野。
写真は卯子酉様(うねどりさま)。早朝に行ったら誰もいなくて、真っ赤な布がたれこめるこの雰囲気にちょっとびっくりした。片手でこの布を結びつけられたら、恋愛が成就するらしい。
Kappa (mythical water-dwelling creatures) is a mascot character of Tono. The police box is also like Kappa's shape. It is said they live in the river around there since long time ago.
遠野には河童が棲んでいるといわれるカッパ淵がある。交番まで河童。水木しげるの妖怪が描かれたツアーバスが気分を盛り上げる。
This is a Japanese guest house. They deck with paper cutout of Seven Deities of Good Fortune.
泊まった民宿。食堂にも七福神をかたどった切り絵が飾られていた。
地方の過疎化や疲弊が社会問題化している中、古くからの伝えを大事に守ってきたことで柳田國男の目にとまり、以来、多くの観光客を惹きつけてきた遠野。ここに地域振興のヒントがある気がしてならない。
真っ暗で虫の音しか聞こえない静かな夜を久々に過ごした。目が覚めると、遠野物語の世界と現実との境界線があやふやになっていた。
